PokeNet, a fan-made Pokemon MMO, just had its first major release on June 30. The release, called "Fearless Feebas," is still a bit buggy and lacks many features, but I've already had a blast playing around with it.
With graphics ripped from the Gameboy Advance titles, PokeNet plays almost identically to the handheld RPGs you know and love. While it currently features only Johto and some of Kanto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are coming in the next updates. All twelve starter Pokemon can be selected, and many more mans can be caught in the wild.

http://pokeglobal.org/wiki/index.php/Main_PageI can't wait to play a more polished version. Of course, like any online game, it will sink or swim depending on the community that develops around it. If a great PVP community arises, I could see myself playing this game well into the future.
I play on the Indigo Plateau server as Etheriel. My current team consists of Prinplup Lv30, Ampharos Lv30, Pidgeotto Lv29, and Venonat Lv16.
